Os pula pra Cuíto

2016
Sound sculpture
@ Lisboa Cidade Aberta Exhibition

“Idiophones” are ancestral musical instruments used in various cultures for both ritual and communication purposes. Due to its high acoustic resonance power, it is heard mainly at dawn and in the late afternoon, when low frequencies propagate at long distances.

“I took inspiration from stories told of rhythm communication – drums and similar Angolan objects – that I saw and played in the 80s. I then sculpted them out of Poplar trees that I cut in my studio.

“Os pula pra Cuíto intends to return to certain roots where cultures have elaborated a communication of men to nature, and of nature to men, who, as a spiritual entity participates in the collective of the nation and is connected to the earth. I see in this, future communities sharing technologies and creating sustainable ways of managing the Planet.”  Carlos Henrich
